I couldn’t believe it when I got a surprise visit from my mother last week.
She kept telling me that she would come to Florida and visit me someday, but I didn’t believe it. I had heard it for four years now, but she still hadn’t shown up. When she showed up on my doorstep last week, I was in shock. I didn’t know if I wanted to scream from fright or cry. I ended up crying as I held onto her like I was afraid she would disappear. She made reservations three months ago so she could surprise me on my birthday. I told her that if she had told me she was coming to Florida, I could have made some arrangements to do some things. She told me she had already rented a car so we didn’t have to worry about it. That’s when I realized she had driven here from the airport. She had this sporty little convertible and we went out for midnight drive around the city. The next two weeks were spent travelling around Tampa BAy, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. We visited the Springs and we went to museums and a couple of parks. We asked her what she had spent for the car rental and she smiled when she said it was $11 a day because of a mix-up. It was supposed to be a compact car. I loved seeing Florida landmarks through her eyes. Before the two weeks were up, we even had the chance to spend a couple days at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino where we won enough money to pay for our entire two weeks and for the air flights. I didn’t realize how much I had missed my mom until it was time for her to go home.
